Ida Sahmie, Hopi/Navajo.
- This potter
has already reached her level of celebrity. She is a Navajo
woman who married into a Tewa family (Priscilla Namingha Nampeyo).
She creates pottery using the techique and style of Hopi-Tewa
but prefers to decorate with Navajo designs. In this large piece
the beige/buff background is splatter painted brown. Open circles
with step designs (symbolizing wedding baskets) surround fox
tail dangers and are repeated around the entire upper surface
of the pot. The unusual challenging feature of this piece is
the same pattern appears on the bottom side of this pot but
with each circle containing maiden figures.
Size: 9" high by 13.5" diameter.
Price: $9500. Mint Condition.
